JPK Composites,the shipyard in Brittany

JPK Composites, the shipyard in Larmor Plage

For over twenty years, JPK Composites has been building exceptional sailing yachts from Larmor-Plage, in the heart of the Breton sailing world. From this cradle of offshore racing, JPK develops yachts that dominate IRC regattas worldwide and excel as fast, comfortable performance cruisers.

Racers and Fast Cruisers, a portfolio of champions

The JPK team consists of 60 employees, and approximately 25 yachts are built per year. Thanks to yacht designer Jacques Valer and Jean-Baptiste Dejeanty, JPK has particularly successful racers and performance cruisers in its portfolio. The models win numerous regattas, and even the Fast Cruisers achieve victories in classifications against racers (ROLEX Sidney Hobart Yacht Race 2024).

Series production with room for customer-specific requirements

Unlike other shipyards in the region, JPK Composites has a particularly large number of (standard) options available when configuring a yacht. JPK advises its clients on this based on their future sailing plans. In addition to the wide range of options, client-specific wishes can be discussed and are sometimes feasible.

The production process

JPK does not build standard GRP yachts but constructs them using lightweight composite. The hull, frames, the deck with a neatly finished ceiling shell, and many smaller components (rudders, tiller, etc.) are all composite, resulting in a light and fast vessel.

The infusion process makes it possible to create lightweight, homogeneous, very rigid, and durable composite parts. The JPK team has mastered this technique to perfection.

The production process is divided into three steps. First, the various fiberglass fabrics and the PVC foam core are placed dry in the mold. Next, the entire structure is vacuum-packed before the resin is injected. Finally, after drying for 24 hours, all auxiliary materials are removed, and assembly can begin directly in the mold. The hull remains in the mold for as long as possible to fully cure in shape.

The assembly

Once the composite parts have been made, it is time to assemble them into the sturdy structure of the boat.

The hull, the deck, the deck mold, and the various modules inside the boat are put together, machined, and precisely adjusted, and then glued: this is the moment when the boat takes shape.

The installation

The installation is the final phase in the construction of a JPK. During this stage, all components necessary for the boat’s operation are added: deck fittings, electronics, electrical systems, piping, onboard equipment, and upholstery. This installation begins during the assembly phase, when the various parts of the boat are most accessible.

Afterwards, the woodwork is installed, along with all finishing and cleaning work to deliver an impeccable result.

Transport to delivery

At the end of the build, the keel is mounted. The boat is cleaned, finished, and prepared for transport. Usually, the boat is launched at the La Basse racing center in Lorient. Next, the mast is installed and the rigging is adjusted.

Once the JPK is fully equipped, it is finally time for the sea trial. This is a special and magical moment. Remaining points are noted and addressed, after which the ship is handed over.
